Farmers’ adoption and effects of three aspects of agricultural information systems in emerging economies: microanalysis of household surveys

Agricultural information systems have the potential to provide various benefits to users, especially farmers. However, it remains uncertain whether the three dimensions of agricultural information systems—system quality, information quality, and service quality—can contribute to farmers’ perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, thus influencing their intention to adopt these systems. We have developed a research framework that combines the Technology Acceptance Model and the Delone and McLean IS Success Model to elucidate the factors shaping farmers’ adoption of agricultural information systems in Vietnam. Field survey data were collected from a sample of 570 farmers in four midlands and mountainous provinces of northern Vietnam. Structural equation modelling was employed for the analysis. The results indicate that the three aspects of agricultural information systems directly enhance farmers’ adoption intentions, or they have a positive correlation with perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, indirectly promoting such adoption intentions. The findings of this study underscore the importance for system developers and policymakers to prioritize the creation of reliable and user-friendly agricultural information systems that can address emerging issues during farmers’ use, thereby supporting their adoption.

Food security, the agriculture value chain, and digital transformation: The case of Jamaica's agricultural business information system (ABIS)

Digital transformation has potential for improving food security through agriculture development. While these transformations are welcomed and while societies are generally moving towards modernization and digitalization, farmers in the Global South have not been transitioning into the age of digitalization, and so are unable to take full advantage in ways that can enhance the agro value chain. Considering this, what may account for the sub-optimal take up from digital transformation deployment in agriculture sector in a small island developing state? Has there been any successes to the agriculture value-chain? What are the lessons to be learned? While the systems are available and farmers may have an interest in using them, their lack of ability to maneuver these new technologies leads to non-take up/use of the new beneficial technologies. A general distrust in government further compounded by a general distrust in the use of the internet has polarized farmers from digital technologies. The sluggish operations of governments of the South have inhibited the innovation that is required to enhance take up of digital technologies in agriculture. Privatization of digitalization in agriculture is therefore proffered as an alternative to a state-owned and state-operated digital transformation of agriculture. A policy options framework is proposed as a starting point to mitigating some of the challenges faced and improving digital transformation efforts in agriculture.

Dynamics of cereal product price transmission between markets in Burkina Faso

PurposeEffective agricultural product price regulation policies depend on market integration and the degree of symmetry in the transmission of agricultural product price signals. This study analyzes the transmission and asymmetry of the price series between the Ouagadougou consumer market and assembly markets considering three primary cereal products in Burkina Faso.Design/methodology/approachThis study applies the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) econometric model, which is an asymmetric extension of the ARDL cointegration model. The price series examined covers the period extending from January 2005 to December 2020.FindingsOur analysis provides novel insights regarding short- and long-term asymmetric effects in the transmission of price signals between assembly markets and the consumer market. We also determine that the effects of negative shocks are more persistent than those of positive shocks in several markets.Research limitations/implicationsFor markets that exhibit symmetrical responses of assembly market prices to consumer market prices, the results could reflect the continuous efforts of market players, particularly the government, to eliminate market failures and ensure the long-term efficiency of cereal markets. To this end, an agricultural market information system can have a crucial role in easing information access for all market players.Originality/valueThis study provides new evidence regarding the nature of the transmission and asymmetry of price information on primary cereal products in the largest markets in Burkina Faso. Applying the NARDL model makes it possible to simultaneously estimate short- and long-term asymmetry.

An Integrated IoT Sensor-Camera System toward Leveraging Edge Computing for Smart Greenhouse Mushroom Cultivation

Industrial greenhouse mushroom cultivation is currently promising, due to the nutritious and commercial mushroom benefits and its convenience in adapting smart agriculture technologies. Traditional Device-Cloud protocol in smart agriculture wastes network resources when big data from Internet of Things (IoT) devices are directly transmitted to the cloud server without processing, delaying network connection and increasing costs. Edge computing has emerged to bridge these gaps by shifting partial data storage and computation capability from the cloud server to edge devices. However, selecting which tasks can be applied in edge computing depends on user-specific demands, suggesting the necessity to design a suitable Smart Agriculture Information System (SAIS) architecture for single-crop requirements. This study aims to design and implement a cost-saving multilayered SAIS architecture customized for smart greenhouse mushroom cultivation toward leveraging edge computing. A three-layer SAIS adopting the Device-Edge-Cloud protocol, which enables the integration of key environmental parameter data collected from the IoT sensor and RGB images collected from the camera, was tested in this research. Implementation of this designed SAIS architecture with typical examples of mushroom cultivation indicated that low-cost data pre-processing procedures including small-data storage, temporal resampling-based data reduction, and lightweight artificial intelligence (AI)-based data quality control (for anomalous environmental conditions detection) together with real-time AI model deployment (for mushroom detection) are compatible with edge computing. Integrating the Edge Layer as the center of the traditional protocol can significantly save network resources and operational costs by reducing unnecessary data sent from the device to the cloud, while keeping sufficient information.

Mitigating land fire disasters: Implementation of agricultural land fire risk management information system in Aunupe Village, South Konawe Regency

Climate change, which causes increased temperatures, prolonged droughts, and dry conditions, heightens the risk of land fires. A similar scenario unfolded in Aunupe Village, where several fires occurred on agricultural land over the past three years, resulting in crop failure and degraded soil quality, leading to financial losses for land-owning farmers. To mitigate the risk of land fire disasters, an agricultural land fire disaster risk management information system is necessary in Aunupe Village, South Konawe Regency. The objective of this community-based empowerment program is to mitigate the risk of land fire disasters. To achieve the desired outcomes, initial coordination with farmer group partners is conducted, followed by the design and installation of fire sensor equipment sets in collaboration with farmer groups. Furthermore, focus group discussions (FGD) are conducted with farmer group partners to ensure their understanding and cooperation. The activities result in the development of an agricultural land fire risk management information system, facilitating the prompt detection, monitoring, and response to fire incidents in the agricultural land of the Lembah Harapan Farmers Group. Additionally, farmer group partners acquire knowledge regarding the utilization of fire mitigation systems.

Information Communication and Computation Technologies (ICCT) for Agricultural and Environmental Information Systems for Society 5.0

Purpose: This paper aims to discover the dynamic landscape of Information Communication and Computation Technologies (ICCT) within agriculture and environmental information management, elucidating their evolutionary trajectory and the resonance of Society 5.0 principles in fostering innovative solutions. By scrutinizing the core technologies constituting ICCT in these sectors, it endeavours to shed light on the potential for integration within the framework of Society 5.0, contemplating both the possibilities and challenges inherent in this convergence. Methodology: This exploratory chapter delves into the evolving landscape of Society 5.0 and its pivotal emphasis on the integration of Information Communication and Computation Technologies (ICCT) to address the complex challenges in agriculture and environmental information management. Analysis/Results: The paper provides a background on the evolution of Society 5.0 and establishes the rationale for exploring the role of ICCT in advancing Agricultural and Environmental Information Systems within this transformative societal framework. The core technologies in ICCT are explored through IoT applications in precision agriculture, the transformative impact of blockchain in agricultural supply chains, and the utilization of remote sensing and Earth observation systems along with data analytics for environmental insights. The paper further investigates the integration of ICCT in Society 5.0 agricultural and environmental systems, unveiling how these technologies support smart farming practices, citizen engagement in agricultural decision-making, and sustainable resource management. Case studies highlight successful ICCT implementations in agriculture and environmental management, underscoring best practices and lessons learned. Emerging trends in ICCT for agriculture and environmental science are explored, providing insights into future developments. Originality/Value: Through the lens of case studies showcasing successful ICCT implementations, it seeks to distill key insights, while also conducting a forward-looking assessment of emerging trends and applications, thus contributing to a deeper understanding of the evolving role of ICCT in shaping sustainable agricultural and environmental information paradigms within the societal context of the future. Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems for Precision Agriculture: A Review

Precision agriculture aims to optimize crop production and minimise environmental impacts by using information technology, remote sensing, satellite positioning systems, and proximal data gathering. This review paper examines current applications and future directions of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) for precision agriculture. Remote sensing provides data on crop health, soil conditions, water status, and yield which can guide variable rate applications within fields. Satellite and aerial platforms allow multispectral and hyperspectral imaging for vegetation indices analysis, crop classification, and stress detection. GIS technology integrates these data layers to model and map variations, develop prescription maps, and analyse spatial relationships. Key research frontiers include high-resolution satellite and drone data for within-field analysis, better integration of proximal and remote sensing, online nutrient and yield monitors, real-time prescription modelling, and predictive analytics using machine learning. Adoption continues to increase with better data analytics tools and greater economic returns realized. Remote sensing and GIS provide an integral platform for variable rate technologies, predictive modelling, and data-driven decision-making for precision agriculture.

DEVELOPMENT OF WEB GIS APPLICATIONS FOR MONITORING AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES IN SUNGAI KAKAP DISTRICT, KUBU RAYA REGENCY

<p>Good agricultural development planning requires an accurate and real-time database. This is very important to see the development and level of welfare of farmers as the spearhead of food security. Sungai Kakap Sub-district, Kubu Raya Regency is one of the sub-districts with the number of Gapoktan (23), Poktan (284), the number of members (6305) with Field Agricultural Extension Workers (PPL) since 2019 totalling 9 civil servants and 14 people helping themselves. The number of PPLs is not proportional to the number of farmer group members, making supervision of agricultural activities difficult. The presentation of information in the form of Web GIS is expected to be a solution so that assistance, guidance, and counselling carried out by the government through the agriculture office can be right on target. The purpose of this research is to build a Web GIS-based Agricultural Information System in Sungai Kakap District so that it can be used as a model for agricultural monitoring activities in other areas. The engineering method in this research uses Remote Sensing and Waterfall methods. Remote Sensing is a method of building spatial data using aerial photo interpretation techniques, while Waterfall is used to build a web GIS as a place to display spatial data. The result of this research is Software Engineering in the form of a Web GIS-based Agricultural Information System Application. This Web GIS application can then be used as a tool to monitor the agricultural activities of each farmer group member in each farmer group.</p>

A Systematic Review of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Agriculture for Evidence-Based Decision Making and Sustainability

The aim of this study was to consolidate current information on the utilization of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) in the agricultural sector, with a focus on their role in promoting evidence-based policies and practices to enhance agricultural sustainability. Additionally, this review sought to identify the challenges hindering the widespread adoption of GIS and RS applications, particularly in low- and middle-income nations. This study employed the methodology of systematic literature review. The findings indicate that the utilization of GIS technology in the agricultural sector has experienced a notable increase over the past few years. The primary areas of use for GIS that have been identified encompass crop yield estimation, assessment of soil fertility, monitoring of cropping patterns, evaluation of drought conditions, detection and management of pests and crop diseases, implementation of precision agriculture techniques, and management of fertilizer and weed control. GIS technology possesses the capacity to augment the sustainability of agriculture by incorporating the spatial aspect of agricultural practices into agricultural policies. Furthermore, the potential of GIS in facilitating evidence-based decision making is expanding. Given the escalating peril of climate change on agriculture and food security, there exists a heightened imperative to include GIS into policy formulation and decision-making processes to enhance the sustainability of agricultural practices. The findings of this study might be beneficial in informing the development of policies that effectively integrate sustainable and climate-smart practices in agriculture.

Application of Agricultural Information Systems Development Kit for Multimodal Agricultural systems

Multifunctional and diverse agriculture has the potential to effectively address conflicting demands and requirements by concurrently boosting biodiversity, production, and provision of environmental services. Digitalized technology can assist in the creation and control of agricultural models and systems that are resource-efficient and adaptable to their environments. In order to demonstrate the potential of digital technology in promoting decision-making processes that prioritize diverse and environmentally sustainable farming practices, we present an analysis of Agricultural Information Systems Development Kit (AISDK). The AISDK was developed through a comprehensive literature review to identify the limitations of current tools. Additionally, in collaboration with stakeholders, we established the criteria for a decision-support tool that is based on knowledge. The findings of the review emphasize the ongoing challenges associated with the integration of multiple spatial, temporal, and sustainability dimensions, as well as the promotion of effective collaboration and communications among farmers and key stakeholders in the agriculture sector.

Agricultural market information: How much and who is willing to pay for it?

AbstractAccess to an agricultural market information system (AMIS) is essential to reduce farmers' risk from market speculation related to information asymmetry. However, AMIS's sustainability depends on the users' needs and willingness to pay (WTP) for market information. This paper explores the WTP for market information among market‐oriented farmers, as well as its determinants. Data were collected through a structured survey with 479 farmers. A contingent dichotomous choice dual boundary estimation is used to measure WTP and a logistic regression is used to ascertain the main determinants of the stated WTP. Experienced losses, access to market information, use of non‐virtual means of information, and degree of farm specialization are the main determinants of the WTP. These findings are useful for establishing a feasible AMIS, and designing its services according to the characteristics, needs, capacities and preferences of the identified potential users.

Performance Evaluation on Agricultural Counseling Agents in Palopo City and Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

Having a key part in a nation’s economy, agriculture has been striving with innovations for global needs. Competent agricultural counseling agents are among them as they function to modernize farmers in terms of knowledge, skill, and technology by transforming their ways of thinking, work ethics, attitudes, and behaviors. This study researched 117 respondents in Palopo City and Luwu Regency. Organized as per Likert scale, data was run through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) by employing Smart-PLS application. The result on Hypothesis 1 came out with tStatistic 3.286 > tTable 1.986 with P value of 0.002 < 0.05 – in other words, agricultural counseling agent’s competence is positively and significantly influential towards agricultural counseling agent’s performance. As of Hypothesis 2, the result was tStatistic 2.312 > tTable 1.986 with P value of 0.021 < 0.05 – this indicates that agricultural counseling information system management is positively and significantly influential towards agricultural counseling agent’s performance. It is therefore recommended to optimize both agricultural counseling agent’s competence and agricultural counseling information system management to improve the performance of agricultural counseling agents in Palopo City and Luwu Regency.

Machine-Learning-Based UAV-Assisted Agricultural Information Security Architecture and Intrusion Detection

In recent years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) remote sensing has developed rapidly in the field of farmland information monitoring. Real-time and accurate access to farmland information and crop growth dynamics is a prerequisite for the implementation of precision agriculture. Machine Learning identifies existing knowledge to acquire new knowledge, promotes the development of Artificial Intelligence, and brings a large number of data training sets for Machine Learning. The present work aims to ensure the safe operation of agricultural information systems and guarantee the data security of intelligent agriculture. The Machine Learning method explores the wireless network deployment of the UAV system. The geographical location deployment of agricultural information security can effectively carry out rapid security detection of agricultural information security. Firstly, the UAV-assisted information acquisition system was studied. Besides, a Double Deep Q-network (DDQN) algorithm for location deployment based on Geography Position Information (GPI) was proposed to quickly optimize the deployment location of UAVs. GPI can avoid the complicated calculation process of channel state information. The DDQN algorithm was introduced to obtain the functional relationship between GPI and the optimal UAV deployment position, forming a new GPI-Learning strategy. In addition, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) are integrated as the CNN-LSTM algorithm to build the intrusion detection system for agricultural IoT for agricultural. In the integrated network structure of the system, LSTM is responsible for data transmission, and CNN is capable of network model building. Combined with the influence of various parameters on the performance of the UAV deployment location algorithm, the simulation experiment set the population size as 36, the discovery probability as 0.25, the step scaling factor as 0.8, and the Levy flight index as 1.25. The network throughput performance of the GPI-Learning algorithm combined with Cuckoo Search was better than other algorithms under different numbers of UAVs. On the KDD-CUP99 data set, the accuracy and detection rate of the agricultural IoT intrusion detection system based on the CNN+LSTM algorithm reached 93.5% and 94.4%, respectively. In general, the agricultural IoT intrusion detection system reported here has crucial practical reference value for the safe operation of agricultural information systems.

Combining shape and crop models to detect soybean growth stages

Accurately monitoring soybean growth stages (SGSs) is crucial for successful crop management and the development of agricultural information systems. This study focused on 18 states that accounted for over 95% of the soybean area in the United States from 2013 to 2020. We proposed an SMFs-APTT method that integrates crop data layers (CDLs), time-series of VIIRS data, and meteorological data. It combines a shape-model function in separate meteorological stages (SMFs) with a crop model that relies on an accumulated photothermal time (APTT). This approach provides both full-season and within-season monitoring of four soybean growth stages (SGSs); i.e., emergence, blooming, pod-setting, and leaf-dropping. Based on the results obtained from the SMFs-APTT method, a long short-term memory (LSTM) model was employed to predict SGSs early. The dates of the detected and predicted SGSs were compared with National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Crop Progress and Condition Report (CPR) statistical data for analysis and verification. Our results show the following. (1) For the full-season extraction of SGSs, the average root mean square error (RMSE) derived using the SMFs–APTT method was 0.86–3.06 days and that obtained using the SMFs method was 1.56–3.26 days. (2) For the within-season monitoring of SGSs, the SMFs–APTT method was also able to accurately track the growth stages as early as ∼30 days after they reach 50% completion with an average RMSE of 2.1 days. (3) For the early prediction of SGSs, the LSTM model that was trained based on the SMFs–APTT results achieved an RMSE of ∼4.3 days at the state scale and could approximately predict SGSs ∼30 days in advance. Our findings suggest that the SMFs–APTT method provides accurate and reliable extraction of SGSs for full-season and within-season monitoring, which is of benefit to crop modeling and management. Furthermore, the LSTM model successfully forecast SGSs, indicating its potential for making early predictions.

The Analysis of Key Success Factors Affecting the Satisfaction of Agricultural Organizational Information Systems

This article takes the WeChat public account of agriculture and rural areas in J Province as the research object to explore the influencing factors of satisfaction of organizational information system (IS) in agricultural sector. Firstly, new media is taken as the background, and the characteristics and communication factors of agricultural informatization are analyzed. Secondly, a user satisfaction questionnaire of the WeChat public account of agriculture and rural areas of J Province is designed based on the satisfaction theory and the success model of IS. Finally, the influencing factors of users' satisfaction with agricultural and rural WeChat public accounts are studied through questionnaire survey. The results show that the correlation coefficients among perceived value (PV), information quality (IQ), perceived usefulness (PU), and platform satisfaction are all positive, and p £ 0.01.

Abstract: The agricultural information system provides its users and researches to get online information about, the crop, statistical details and new tendencies. The trends of the crops act so that these will be pretty important to the users who access these via the Internet. The main features of the information system includes information retrieval facilities for users from anywhere in the form of obtaining statistical information about fertilizer, land availability, diseases, suitable soil concentration for the corresponding crops, statistical information about exports and etc. In addition this provides individual information about Intercrops related to main crops. The system allows the retrieving facilities but also the updating facilities to the authorized persons. After 20 years of neglect by international donors, agriculture is now again in the headlines because higher food prices are increasing food insecurity and poverty. In the coming years it will be essential to increase food productivity and production in developing countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and with smallholders. This however requires findings viable solutions to a number of complex technical, institutional and policy issues including land markets, research on seeds and inputs; agricultural extension; credit; rural infrastructure; storage; connection to markets; rural non-farm employment and food price stabilization

PERANCANGAN SISTEM INFORMASI PERTANIAN KABUPATEN TOBA BERBASIS WEB

Agricultural information systems are very important and very influential in conveying information about agriculture to the wider community. At this time information about agriculture in Toba district does not yet have the right system for conveying agricultural information, resulting in information about agriculture not being conveyed to the wider community, especially the people of Toba district properly and quickly. To overcome the above problems, the researchers designed a web-based agricultural information system in Toba district which aims to make it easier for the wider community to find the latest information about agriculture such as types of agricultural products, production yields, prices and agricultural activities in Toba district. This information system was built by utilizing the HTML, CSS and MySQL programming languages to process the database used to use the Sublime Text application as a place for program design.
